ALBANY, NY – October 23, 2026 – PRESSADVANTAGE –
O’Brien & Eggleston PLLC, a criminal defense firm with offices in New York and Massachusetts, is offering its annual $1,000 scholarship to students who will attend school in the fall of 2027 as pre-law undergraduates or first-year law students. The firm will accept applications through February 15, 2027, which is roughly four months away.
The scholarship is intended to help students with the expenses associated with attending a school anywhere in the United States. The firm will make a $1,000 check payable directly to the award recipients, and the funds are to be used exclusively for school tuition and related expenses. The firm will notify the scholarship recipient of the selection on or about February 28, 2027.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or otherwise authorized to work in the United States. They must have been accepted into a school where they will attend in the fall of 2027 as pre-law undergraduates or first-year law students. They must also have a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
Applicants must submit a completed resume, a typed essay of one to three pages on a topic of their choice related to the area of law they intend to pursue, and a complete copy of their school transcripts. They must also provide an acceptance letter from a school within the United States and proof of legal residency, such as a birth certificate, passport, or permanent resident card, among other documents. Social Security cards are not accepted.
Only applications submitted electronically through the form on the firm’s scholarship page will be considered. The form asks for the applicant’s contact information, graduation date, and the colleges or law schools to which the applicant has applied or been accepted, and it accepts uploaded documents of up to 50 megabytes each. The firm asks that applicants not call or contact it directly about the scholarship.
The firm expects recipients to submit receipts in accordance with Internal Revenue Service regulations. According to IRS guidance, a scholarship is tax-free only if the recipient is a candidate for a degree at an eligible educational institution and the amount does not exceed qualified education expenses.
Those expenses include tuition and fees required for enrollment or attendance, and fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses. Amounts used for incidental expenses, such as room and board, travel, and optional equipment, are taxable, as are payments for teaching, research, or other services required as a condition of a scholarship. The tax treatment of an award therefore depends on how the funds are used.
O’Brien & Eggleston PLLC focuses exclusively on criminal defense, including DWI, drug crimes, sex crimes, violent crimes, and white-collar crimes. The firm has offices in Albany, Binghamton, Walton, and Saratoga Springs, New York, and in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
